I was thinking of getting some stage two cams (VT or Comp) down the road once the car is paid off with comp cam springs. I was told by a guy at Sutton Performance which is a very respected performance dealership, that you should shim the valve springs when putting them in? A lot of people just change the cams and springs and are fine, but he said there's a risk of valve to piston contact if you don't shim them. has anyone else heard of this?
Valve spring shims are NOT required if you do billet cams. Of which the Copms AND VTs are. I have the Comp 270's in my car with the comp valve springs. No shims were necessary.

I notice that everything you ask has been answered on modular depot. it's an excellent technical site. No flames intended.

is there a problem with someone trying to get as many opinions as he can
and did you ever think he posted both at thesame time and might also trying to help out this site by posting at both
and you are wrong there are times when shims are needed.
there has been many people when using the comp billet cams that they had to be shimed now I have never heard of any when using the vt

I have a ? for you
you have cams and long tube headers and you only run a 13.2-13.3
everyone I have seen with those mods are running high 12s on radials and low 12s on slicks

I didn't shim my springs - I shimmed (sp?) the adjusters...but then again my cams aren't very high lift :cbullet: :)

well if you want to setup the valvetrain correctly you'll have to check installed height and cross that over into seat pressure per the given height...shim accordingly to euqalize pressure/height
they'll work fine if you don't, especially with a mod motor, but its definately a detail that should be looked into

There is a pretty good article in the new 5.0 about installing Comp cams in a two valve. Fats, I have the same year as you do and i am interested in the same thing.
In the article they mentioned the shim plates but didn't go into detail so I was kinda wondering the same thing.

I have crower stage 2 cams in my car (03 GT) I put them in this spring. I called and talk to lots of places they were the most helpfull. They told me just to bolt them in no shimming required. I called back a couple of times for question and they were very nice. I have had no promblems, valvetrain is quiet and it runs strong. :shifter:
intake dur. 269 lift .560
exhaust dur. 278 lift .571

How do you like the Crower cams? It looks like the have a slight taller lift verses the Comp and VT's(.550). Did you get a nice HP gain and lopy sound? Did you change the valve springs as well i assume?
How much do those cams go for?
