View Full Version : Question about axles

I know that the axles are one of the weak links in my 03. Do they sell a better "standard" axle so I don't have to replace the trac-loc unit or whatever it's called? I know Greg hammers on his mach and has never had a problem with his but I know another guy that snapped one just peeling out and screwed up his whole rear-end, then ford wouldn't cover it saying he was abusing the car.
Any help would be apreciated.

Yeah, Moser, Strange, and Superior are are few top names. They make 28-spline street axles that are a direct replacement for your stock trac-loc. What kind of tires/size do you use? I went with Moser 31-spline street axles(still use c-clips), and an Explorer trac-loc with 15" Nitto's, no problems leaving the line hard. 28-spline Street axles are around $200 I think? I paid $245 for my 31's with 3" studs.
They have race axles that come with c-clip eliminators, but then you would need your axle housing cut about 2" on each end for them, and your backing plates machined. The problem is that the c-clip elims can leak though, but that's more a drag racing set up.

Mike I told ya those axles are brittle. I do drive my car hard but I do not "hammer" it off the line. Look at my 60 foot times, my launches are actually somewhat "soft". AlexWI broke the axles on his Mach1 on street tires. On my Mach1 site, there are stories of people breaking the stock axles. As Steven mentioned, there are bolt-in replacement kists you can get. I think Moser makes a kit for less than $300.00, should take all of an hour to install them...

I think I am going to wait to put my gears in until I get some better axles then, it should only be a few more weeks anyway.
Thanks guys for the info.

I broke the left rear axle at the grove last year with nitto's the car doesn't have very many miles on it. I don't the stock axles are very strong.

Broke my drivers side axle on 17 inch nittos this year at US41. THey are like a ticking timebomb. I upgraded to 31 splines since. I'd recommend it.

I just got my gears and axles in last week and am anxious to put them in. I went with the Strange 31 spline.

Stay away from c-clip elims on the street, they will eventually leak. Strong c-clip axels will be fine for a quick street car, but anything serious will warrant 9-inch ends and such.

I think 10.99 is the magic # for c-clip eliminators.

I snapped my passenger side axle in August at Byron on Nitto's. Now I am going with Moser 33 spline axles, spool, c-clip elims, and studs. This rearend will be ready when my bank account (and wife) are ready :)

I have Mosers on both of my cars too and neither one of them leaks. Many many street miles on both cars too.
