View Full Version : Helmet Questions
For my application in the vert I will need one as soon as I break into the 14's.
I am looking at a full face, but do I need to go with a SA2000 rating or will a M2000 be sufficient?

Here ya go Kirk! Not sure what your objectives or goals are / where you plan on racing or the class, and track rule/s hope this helps!
NHRA rule book p.227:
"13.99 or quicker must use a helmit meeting SNELL 90. 95, K98, 2000, SFI 31.2, 31.2, 41.1 or 41.2 specs"
Ok... Both carry SNELL 2000 rating as far as I can tell.
Thanks James.

Ever seen that video of Mark's engine blowing at WIR? Notice the balancer flying across the track. That would hurt if it came thru the top of a 'vert and conked ya on the head. ALWAYS wear a helmet while drag racing, even if you run 16's. You never know what can happen.
That is another reason I am looking for the info on one.
The SA is nomex lined and can be used on a race track if you ever plan on going wheel-to-wheel against other cars.

I use a snell m2000 helmet
m = motorcycle. Those used to be illegal, and its difficult to get a clear ruling on if they are legal now. I think they are, but I prefer a helmet designed for cars.
Another thing to consider is new snell ratings are coming out next year. I have a G-force open face, and plan on buying a good nomex lined full face next year with the new rating.

HJC makes incredible m2000 rated helmets
if you read through the snell ratings...the differences between sa and m are pretty small. Impact safety is inface the same for each.
sa is tested with a rollbar simulator for a single phase while an m rated helmet is sumitted to a hemi shaped object...sa is tested for fire safety of course
m rated helmets require more area of vision up, down and peripheral
HJC just happens to be the manufacturer I am looking at. :D
