View Full Version : Tranny mounts & speedo cable
Well, I am %70 of the way to getting my tranny out. For about 2 hours, I was stuck on trying to get one of the two bolts out connecting that main cross member that holds both the transmission and the exhaust. My issue was that one of the mounts had rusted and the bolt would not come out. I tried hitting it with a hammer, using a C-clampo to push it out as well as using my ratchet to try to spin it out (and combinations of the three). Eventually I decided to go by a rule of thumb: "Sawz-all Solves-all."
As for the mount, the rubber seemed to be past its prime. I think that the tranny mount was making a loud "thumping" noise whenever I pegged the car in first or second. It always felt like it was coming from right under my seat, which is where the mount is.
So right now, I am short a mount. Should I just go and buy an oem or generic mount (carquest/napa), or go for a better aftermarket mount (probably pick up a complete set for the engine too). I do not see any high hp numbers in the near future. BTW- I am a bit cheap, so give me a price on both.
----------------------------
As for my kaput speedo, I found the source of the problem. My speedo cable was resting on the exhaust pipe. The cable seemed to be new (except for the melted part), but whoever installed it before I bought it didn't secure it properly. My question right now is: should I install a new one, or should I get it installed at a shop?

I have a solid alum trans mount, left over from my T5 days. It replaces the rubber mount. I don't know if you would want a solid mount for a street car, but I would sell it for $15 bucks if you want it.
I also have some brand new aftermarket red rubber, interlock motor mounts that would go very nice with the solid trans mount..... I can't think of the brand name at this time...
if you are interested let me know & we'll talk about it. :thumbs_up

you can get a stock replacement mount for very cheap...$15 for a cardone iirc
My mistake!!!! I am looking for the bushings at the end of the crossmember, not the mount between the tranny and crossmember.
Okay, but will that give me a rough ride or lots of vibration (as if I don't already have that)? As for replacing the bushings, nobody sells repacement bushings, only the entire crossmember assembly for $125-150. I figured that there are some aftermarket bushings out there. They are most likely stiffer, but that solid mount might go too far. Then again, that price could win. But I want to make sure we are on the same page here.
S where can I get one of those replacement bushings and not the crossmember?

 I made some out of alum to replace the rubber 1s.
the only rubber on my car is the tires....so its not a good ride on the road.

The double-hump crossmember with bushings is $35.00 from several places...
I spent $14 for both bushings. My crossmember is in good shape.

WOW! That's some kind of trick car! So there's no insulation on your wiring, or hoses, belts, seals, grommets, busings, O rings, or weatherstriping... All billet?
Just pullin your chain.

well all my hoses are braided S.S. line & The only belt is the 1 holding up my 3 layer fire suit, I make my own wire & dip it in wax. but you got me on the rest.....
But I do have a lot of billet stuff seeing that I own a machine shop. :thumbs_up

energy suspension makes cross member bushings part number 4.1102
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=ENS-4-1102G&N=120
ENS-4-1102G Ford: 1979-93 Mustang, black, transmission crossmember mount to frame bushing Today $13.95
That is the exact bushing I ordered yesterday.
New question: What should I use to support the engine with after I remove the tranny? I can't use my jack because it is alread holding the tranny while I unbolt it. My idea is to stick some 2x4s between the engine and firewall as well as the engine and radiator support. They shouold get the job done, but I am open to suggestions.
BTW- cool that you make your own parts. Once the "Al"stro is gone, I think I'll buy a vertical mill. IMO, a vertical mill with a few extra accessories and some knowledge will give me lots of potential for custom parts.
As for the bushing, my low-cost replacement plans ranged from wrapping a bolt with electrical tape to capping off one side of the bushing hole and pouring molten rubber in it and then drilling a hole through it. I was looking for an old tire yesterday!

Al,
the motor mounts are from energy suspension also. they are brand new 2 yrs ago, but never used.I made solid mounts & didn't use the energy suspension mounts.
I am realy busy this week trying to get my car ready for ford day at GLD this sunday...... so I don't know what they cost ect. I will sell them for 25% less than Summit & you pay shipping ect.
If you can wait untill next week sometime I will find out what they cost & we can deal.
the 2x4s sound ok, I usally use a jack stand under the oil pan. or the spare tire jack if you still have it works good.

the engine will be fine unless you have a stock plastic mechanical fan...then it will rock into the fan shroud
toss a chunk of 2x4 between the block and the firewall if needed
I am not planning on pulling the motor till this winter, so I will not need them any time soon.
