Mike's truck looked pretty insane yesterday at GLD!!! Impressive MPH in the 8th, heading into a 40+ mph headwind. That truck is BIG and makes for quite a wind catcher... I am sure when he gets that thing tuned he's going to be a force at RSD...!!
To get an idea of how windy it was, look at the girl in the top right of this photo of Mike- the girl is facing due north. She looks like she is about to be blown off her feet...! :thud:
Mike ran VERY impressive MPH into this wind. ;)

Mike found out what broke on his last pass..... The timing chain jumped a tooth. I don't much more than that yet. I will keep you posted.

You should know by now that you won't get a response to that question.......yet.

Ok Mark, that's not too terrible.
Eric... Put it this way. Mike's truck was almost faster MPH-wise in the 8th mile than my Mach was in the 1/4 yesterday.
against a 40+ mph headwind!! :thud:
His truck was looking real nice.

Greg - I know what it ran. He has my trailer so he has to tell me! :shifter:

Update...So far it seems that he only needs 5 new valves and a new timing chain set. So it isn't all that bad.

Sorry to hear that. But like you said....it could have been a lot worse.

Any thoughts on going to a gear driven timing set?

Gear drives are bad news. They introduce harmonics into the valve train and rob a more power than a chain. For mild applications they are OK but i wouldn't recommend one in Mike's.

So the stuff that you hear about Pete Jackson Gear drives making the valve timing "precise and unwavering" are offset by the harmonics? That's good info. What some of the racers at GLD with higher horsepower motors have told me when I asked about this is that chains can stretch and can also do like what happened to Mike, so I was wondering. But that's why I asked. I'm smalltime in the horsepower department, I'm sure you guys with real motors have investigated these things.

I ran a gear drive for many years on my first Mustang drag car and never had any problems with it making around 400HP. However, once i got into the high end motors, EVERY engine builder i talked to told me not to use one. Jim Kuntz, Tony Briante, and Keith Craft all said the same thing. A Jesel belt drive is the best setup....and that's why you see them on every cup car and competition drag motor. It's not just for the ability to externally adjust cam timing.....though that's a big plus too! I found 15 HP on the dyno playing with cam timing last year....in a matter of 3 pulls and about an hour. I wouldn't run a belt drive on the street, though. And like i said, for mild performance applications the gear drives will work fine.

Mike's Truck ------> Impressive! I seen him run at WIR a couple weeks ago. Very impressive! I have never seen his truck leave the line so hard. What Mike has done with that truck since he bought it is simply amazing.
