View Full Version : Brake problem not sure what to look at.

Ok I've noticed my car hasn't been stoping very well lately. It's almost like the front brakes aren't having much grab. When changing tires I also noticed that it looks like I have lots of pad on the fronts, rotors look good too. I had the front brakes done at 30 some K miles and the car now has 75K. I am easy on the brakes Last Sunday I went over to my friends for the Bears game and almost rear ended someone when traffic slowed up quickly at one point.

One other clue why I'm sure it's the fronts is I had my trailer on with a small wood chipper putting weight on the rear and the car stopped better. Since I'm not driving it daily it's not a huge problem but I'd like to be able to come out on Oct. 9th.

The cheapest thing I can think to do is throw another set of pads on the front and make sure the calipers are moving freely. Any hints of what else to check. The pedal feels firm so it's not air in the lines or anything. :dunno:

Did you replace pads and rotors? If you just did pads, the rotors could have a glaze from the old pads causing it to not stop as well. If you replacved both do you notice if the pedal fades at all? Does it pull to one side or the other?

I haven't replaced anything however the braking performance is very poor. As I said it looked like there was lots of pad on both the inner and outer pads. Roters arn't grooved at all and it doesn't pull. Rather than throw parts at it I should run it down to the corner garage for an inspection. Probably much better that guessing and be out time and money.

I would maybe take some fine grit sandpaper or DA to the rotor surface lightly to clean it up, and do the same to the pads. Try that sounds like it may be a glaze issue like quietflow said.

Maybe no air in lines but maybe low on fluid or water (moisture) in the lines.
