View Full Version : No wonder it rattled with the 30 Lb Injectors. PMS rocks!!!

Well, now that I have one, I can see how valuable a tuning tool the EFI Systems/Anderson Ford PMS system is. Was talking to Bob Kurgan last night and he says "How much boost are you making?" I answer "11-12 PSI"
Then he says "What is your base fuel pressure?"
"39 PSI w/vaccum line connected"

He says "You're running out of fuel around 5600 RPM"

I wanted to know how he knew this, of course he has years of blower tuning experience. He wanted to know the injector duty cycle, which the PMS displays. I have only had a day to play with the PMS, and looking at the data terminal while driving is not wise. So I get my kid to ride with me and stare at the screen while I hammer it. At lo and behold, at 5600 RPM the duty cycle is at 96%.

:thud:

We can fix this via fuel pressure increase and PMS tuning. But it is obvious that with the 30's I was running out of fuel, and that's why I could not get beyond 5 PSI w/o a problem.

The tune-abiity with this device is awesome. All I could do with the Extender was to set a targeted A/F ratio that is constant thruout the entire powerband, and it is not "boost sensitive" either. With this device we can tune based on 500 RPM increments as well as boost pressure. So, rather than use a BTM, we can set the parameters precisely how we want them. We can tell it to add timing before the boost comes on and to subtract it when it does come on, and it's an absolute setting, unlike a BTM. BTM is a crude device by comparison. There's much more to it, but my initial impression is that this is a "must have" for a blower car. While there is a learning curve here, I am already getting comfortable with the data input functions. If you run a blower and can find one of these used, I'd grab it. It's worth the money.

I think I have enough clutch to try to take on SMOKDU at the shootout :hehe:

Amen to that Greg, I picked up the EEC-V version about a month ago. LOVE IT. Like i said in another post, pick up the data logging software. Helps even more. I have tried Tweecer before and sold it right away, too many table to too quircky. Anderson has done a good job once again with this. Easy to use and very effective.

Sounds like the PMS system is the way to go, I will have to tell my dad to get ready to pony up the dough for one of these.

I was going to get a pms system for the 93 cobra. But I realized that I wasn't going to mess around with the car. So I am going over to illinois dyno to get a chip burned for it with the blower. I want to keep the cobra original, besides the blower.(v-2 pushing 14# of boost) If I was Building a car mostly for the strip/street and was going to be changing parts out as I go, I would of went with the pms instead of the chip. On another note, I had a hugger orange notch that I sold the had 30#ers when I bought it with a v-1 pushing 10# of boost. I ran out of injector at about the same rpm that you ran out of injector. This time, I went with 42# ers, ditched the fmu, put in a 255 in tank with a t-rex inline. Looking for a afpr and an ignition before I get it tuned in 2 weeks. should be good for 425 rwhp. Tom

Greg you need to have Mike drive & hammer it, so you can watch the screen.
I know Mike thinks its a good idea. :thumbs_up

Sheesh you guys... :D

Kinda funny though- When Mikey was holding the PMS data terminal, and I hammered it, he flew back in the seat and he says out loud "HOLY CRAP DAD!!!

Is that PMS available for pre obdII vehicles?

They make them for pretty much any mass-air system.

Scroll down to the PMS panel (AFM's website kinda sucks, they need Greg to make it better) ;)

Installing a PMS isn't going to alter the originality at all, you just unplug the EEC, plug the harness from the PMS into it and plug the factory harness into the other PMS connector. If I were you I would re-think this- Look for a used PMS. Reasons?

1. Once you have a chip burnt, if you make any changes (and we all do) then the chip has to be reburnt. Even if you do not plan to make any changes, I'd go that route anyway.

2. PMS, when used with a MAP sensor, can fine-tune based on actual boost present.

3. You can get an idea of what is happening (such as the duty cycle of the injectors for example) on the data terminal.
