View Full Version : Power Shifting?

I know a lot of you guys power shift your Mustangs and have no problems, but i get worried. The last thing i want to do is grind something bad. I tried power shifting at this no-traffic intersection by Casandra's house and the car felt like a whole different car, it moved. but i kind of baby power shifted  Is it normal to hit the rev limiter between each shift? Soon as my foot hit the clutch, the revs immediately jump to the limiter. Is that how it goes, or am I not fast enough? i get worried because once i had to pay for a rebuilt tranny which was on my old `89 325i which was expensive :thud: i shifted too fast before i could get the clutch engaged and grinded bad and every gear was like neutral after that, blew out 2nd and 3rd syncros. Is there any tips besides mash gas and shift?

Shift sooner if you are hitting the limiter. Remember that day you let me drive you car at GLD? I never lifted, not even for a fraction of a second.
that's why I posted a better time with your car ;)

If you hit the limiter kinda "baby shifting", you probably just werent quick enough. When I do it, the RPM only go up about 200-300, just quick in & out with the clutch. Remember: Practice makes perfect. Baby steps will get ya there.....
Danno, I have yet to see you drive a fast car. What are you powershifting? A manual trans equipped go-kart? The Dead errr RED Dragon can't be powershifted, so what are you alluding to??? :p

What kind of risks is there powershifting? what kind of abuse is it on you clutch and trans?

Nothing to worry about if you hit the gears. Missing is what causes headaches. Do you have any stops on your shifter to prevent overshifting? Without stop bolts, you can shift too far and bend/crack/break/wreck the shift forks.
yes, i have an UPR shifter that has stop-bolts. I'm worried about 3rd gear, that seems to be the hardest gear to power shift.

I hate 3rd gear thats the one I have a problem with also. I have a Hurst shifter with stops and have no worries about powershifting, when I had my previous GT with the stock shifter I screwed up 3rd pretty badly. Also the former Beemer you had is going to be more expensive than your mustang if it does break.

That's true Adam:)
I think i'll try just power shifting 4th at first until i get a little more confident in it.

Anyone wanna take my car down the ol' 1320 Saturday? I think it will hurt less if someone else breaks it than if I do it myself.. :p J/K I'm sure by then, I'll muster up the willingness to beat on my car. It's been 6 years since I've driven anything down the track.

I'll make a pass or 2 in your car if you like. BTW...............I won't break your
car. :D Or if you'd like pointers @ the track, I'm willing to help.
I've helped out others in the past with good results. :thumbs_up

Baby steps, my friend.... Baby steps!!!
Actually, 3rd is easier to me. I just kinda guide the shifter up with my palm, the shifter is spring loaded, automatically centers itself in neutral, so it just goes smooth. 2nd you hafta actually pull.....
Just get a feel for it for a while before actually trying full nuts powershift. Try just shifting fast, do it over and over in the driveway if you like, once you get used to it, you're gonna laugh wondering "Why was I even worried about this?"
Like Dan said, the shifter is spring loaded and most aftermarket shifters have stiffer springs in them to ensure a quick return to neutral. Let the stick do all the work, all you need to do is use the palm of your hand to push forward as hard as you can. Forward and only forward, don't guide it.Guiding the stick to 3rd gear on a powershift is a sure fire way to miss the gear or grab the clutch before your completly in the gate for third.
I did actually practice it in my driveway before ever trying it on the street or track. I still practice sometimes while I am in line waiting to run. Rip the stick off to second and shove it away to third............ :thumbs_up

I have to drive forklift saturday....:(
Dan how fast is it? thats going to look funny at GLD on MMA day. what do you light up the pre stage & stage lights with? the tips of the forks or the tires?
he had him by a fork at the 1/8 mi.... :D
Steve I would put some kind of clutch peddle stop on your car. you only need to push the peddle in a little bit to power shift. I would bet that you would get better reaction times also.
I started off with a pc of wood that I would zip tie to the peddle when I was at the track.the pc of wood, would hit the floor/fire wall & stop the peddle from going in all the way to the floor, when I pushed the peddle in.

Would you believe I actually tried marking off a 1/4 mile at work? We have a huge, long aisle, I know its at least 1/4 of a mile, it takes me over 90 seconds wide open to get from one end to the other, I also have a stopwatch on my cell phone. Only problem is the lift has an hour meter, not an odometer.....
I can see you making a pass at work, all crunched down for less drag. I bet you do a big burn out also. our fork truck at work must be made by chevy because it can get out of its own way.

You gotta disconnect the govenor first. Try flying in reverse then drop'er in drive and floor it should leave alot of dried rubber dust on the floor.... :shifter:

I've been reading this and now I want to try it. I got the MM clutch pedal adjuster so I could set the pedal so it has just the nessary travel. Better do that tonight and get used to a low pedal if I'm gonna do that.

How big of a piece of wood should i use? Sounds like a good ideal. but i wanna make sure i go down far enough so the clutch does engage.

just make shure that you set it up right. the car should not move or surge forword when you are on flat ground. I would put it in 1st gear & rev it up also just to make shure you have a little air gap between the disk & flywheel & pressure plate at high rpm's. like when you are staged & the lights are droping down & you have the rpms up , you don't want to roll forword & red light.
you can also put the car on jack stands & see if you can hold the rear tires from truning with your hand, when somebody pushes in the clutch when its in gear...... good luck it should help.

Just an FYI: Danno said "no worries" but that is not true. Even if you hit all your powershifts, it does take an eventual toll on your synchros. In time they will wear and cause chunking on downshifts and such. It will happen eventually. You can have a good shifter, and not miss a single gear over an entire season, and you WILL put a strain on your blocker rings/synchros.

I bet Greg, i've seen the inside of a T-5 after hundreds of powershifts and it was ugly, i may powershift one run Saturday if i can get over my fear of tearing something up

Dude, you're kidding right??? Racing is a blast! You don't go just to run a new best, you go to hang out with friends, practice your reaction times, watch the goings on, man it's much more then just running a number.
I get a buzz from bangin' gears, even if I know how it might turn out, the thrill of screamin' down the 1320 never gets old...!

So Steve, have you tried it at the track yet?
No, not really sonce i was running like **** yesterday. i missed 3rg 3 out of my 4 runs:( The one run it hit 3rd i power shifted 4th, but it didn't help. My ET's and mph were both down. Total inconsistant yesterday. it sucked since that will probably be my last race of the year. found a nail in one of my Nitto's too, and they are so shot that they are not worth fixing, and weren't hooking too well.
