I am thinking about replacing the stock clutch before its completely gone this winter. My case leaks pretty bad and I have ground the gears more then I should have. What is all involved in rebuilding it? What are some good upgrades to do while its apart? Are there different numerical gears I can put in there? I have 3.73's in the rear but I want step up to a 4.10 or maybe 3.90 so can I increase (numerically) the gears in the tranny to increase the overall? I just rebuilt the rear end a year ago and dont want to tear into it for a while. The car is a 91.

You should probably at the very least step up to a 2.95 first gear ratio.

Better yet would be to get a T5 "Z" trans. It is rated for 330 lb ft of torque.

I can rebuild yours with or with-out a gear upgrade. I can also sell you a rebuilt T5z trans.

Let me know if you are interested.

I thought 91's came with a world class? Fritz if you want to PM me with prices that would be very helpful, thanks.

T5 101.

All T5's from '85 on up are "World Class" transmissions. This includes the z-spec also. From '85 on though they had upgrades every couple of years to try to keep up with the improved engine performance. So, in stock trim the mid-'90's T5's are the best to get. Any of them from '85 on can be upgraded parts-wise to bring them up to the later model HP and torque rating.

Then of course there are the aftermarket suppliers of internal parts such as Liberty and G-Force. These two examples supply gearsets that will almost double the torque capacity of the T5, but they also come with a pretty good price tag. A good number of people are interested in these as compared to switching to a Tremec TKO or 3550 mainly because you can use your stock bellhousing and driveshaft and it weighs less than the TKO.

Class dissmissed.

Class dismissed . . .ok. What would be the benefits of going from a 3.35 to a 2.95 1st gear? Also what other specific upgrades would be recommended to handle say 350 ftlbs? What is specifically different about a t5z?

The biggest benefit to having the 2.95 first gear are the alloys that the gears themselves are made of. I personally don't think that you'll notice the .4 ratio difference.

In a nut shell, a T5z with a good aftermarket shifter..

What is specifically different about a t5z?

The "z" spec trannies are built with a "Cobra" tapered roller bearing joining the input and output shafts together. Where as a non-"z" trans has 15 individual roller (straight) bearings and has a lot more side to side play. The taper bearing will actually keep the whole assembly tighter and this aids in increased torque capabilities.

Fritz,

How does the 92 T5 rate?

If it's the original tranny, it's probably a 1352-208. It is rated for 300 lb ft of torque. It will have the 3.35 first gear in it. It was also the first T5 series to get carbon fiber blocking rings.

I would rate it as a keeper. :thumbs_up
