How much power or how far will stock 28 spline Ford rear axles survive before carnage occurs? I will be converting to a 5 bolt axle this winter, and just weighing all my options.

It's hard to say. It's really hit or miss. Some people last a while others break right away. If it's a 99+ mustang they seem to break pretty easily

Yeah, the newr mustangs have cheap cast 28-spline axles that i've heard people bring on street tires and almost stock power! I would say it's crap shoot, i upgraded to a 31-spline forged axles for peace of mind, especially running in 15" drag radial. I thought the old 5.0's came with forged 28-splines, and since they are lighter, they can hold up to a lot. you can get into the low 12's and shouldn't worry i would assume.

Thats all fine and dandy, till you break one and since you have no axel retention device you either wreck your car, the tree, or someone elses car.....

..........or all of the above. Isn't it in the rule book that any car faster than 10.99 is required to have an axle retention device????

10.99 is a long way away for me, but while I'm in there, c-clip eliminators aren't a bad idea, and inexpensive, relatively speaking. Has anyone installed these before?

ditto. someone else wrecked my car this year real bad and i'm still pissed about it!!

I would just get 31 spline axels. I'm not a fan of c-clip elim's for a street car.

What's wrong with C-clip eliminators on a street car. I have them on both of my cars. Its nothing more than the same retention device used on a 9 inch rear end. I don't understand what is not streetable about them.....

They will eventually leak or at least seep fluid if driven alot. I run them and have only had problems with keeping them tight( I think alot of turning wirh the spool puts wierd strain on them?) I even have tried loctight. When they come loose they leak, but I check them often. I put a set on a buddys car the same way I did mine and they leak no matter what you do, so we put the 9 inch ends on and they are leak free.. I feel if it is a strip only car or cruise night car they are fine, but for a daily driver 9 inch ends are a must. C-clip elimns are mearly a band-aid design for a 9 inch end. I have 9 inch ends on one car and c-clip elimns on the other and I will tell you the 9 inch stuff is far superior in design and function. Both will work fine though if maintained properly....

True. I couldn't get mine to stop leaking for more than a few months. I only drive it on week nights too! I was gonig to go with 9" ends but said screw it and put reg. 8.8 back in with 31 spline axels and c-clips!

I guess we must be lucky that they dont leak then........
You gotta drive the car for them to leak.....
It was just a joke so take it easy.......

I think I recall reading that in order to use c-clip elim's or 9 in ends, machining work is required around the tube flange.

Good info in that link. It doesn't look all that difficult. I plan doing some suspension work this winter anyway...

i've made 2 mid 10 passes on stock 28 spline axles with ET Streets. 60's were 1.46 and 1.48
yes i know they're supposed to be hardened axles with long studs. only reason i made the passes was to get a soft baseline with the new 393 and see if the car was even going to hook.
now that i know it does, i know what i need to do this winter to get the car legal for 10's. trans shield, flexplate shield, window net, add the halo and 2 front bars to the cage, axles, and we should be ready.
