A buddy of mine has an extra C-4 that he said I could have for 100 bucks, fresh rebuild with hi-po clutches small bellhousing without valve body. Is this a good deal or no? I would put in a reverse manual vb. Is there anything I need to ask him about it? Or should I buy a new C-4 form one of the big companys?
Thanks,
Joel

I would have it gone through no matter what. I would never personally run a C-4 unless it came from dynamic. Give Harold a call he will hook you up. Best customer service in the industry.......

blah...there's nothing you can't do to a c4 in your own basement/backyard/garage that the big companies do
hell you can rollerize a c4 via madhatter for $200 complete
Find out what year it is and what they used for internals...ask about the servo (what letter it has, were the seals replaced, brand and number of frictions in each drum, any pump/oiling mods, etc

I'll second that. I built my own trannies for years.....until I started making real horsepower. Plus having a lifetime warranty and life time refreshing is nice too.

Well right now I am on a limited budget so....

have you built any this way? how many passes do you get on them before they need to be gone through?

its all right there
Rob is in the 10's with a c4 built exactly as mine currently is, stock with good clutches and great attention to detail when it comes to clearances. We're both doing the roller, and 10 total clutch build soon. Paul and Dennis both have been into the 10's with their home built c4's, though Dennis broke a few parts after ~300 passes

I don't agree with the stock 26 spline input shaft holding 600hp. I've seen many mild 5 liters break stock inputs. I think they are pushing it with stock planetary sets too. I might have to go take some pictures of my carnage later and post it. I don't doubt you can build a good C4 in your basement to handle a mild engine, but when you start making some good horsepower its time to let the professionals handle it. Warranties are nice, especially when you never have to use them.

You're right Darrell...If I was a class racer I'd buy a name brand c4, but for a 10 sec or slower car that isn't being used as a serious ffw/nmra/etc racecar its a bit easier and cheaper to build your own.
btw its most likely that those stock 26 spline shafts were hardened versions, so its a little more believable
Another way to look at the warranty is turn around...it might take dynamic a while to investigate and fix your trans, but a homebuilt unit is only limited by your own free time and budget
The c4 is special in that the parts are readily available and cheap enough that you can start building them for high hp with a little patience, research, attention to detail and time. I can go out tomorrow and have 4 working cores for $100 or less, and have enough to last say 1200 passes (4 seasons, 300/ea) for under 1k total in a 3000-3200lb 10-11 sec car

I will second the input shaft thing, mine wasnt close to 600 hp and it snapped. I am debating the big boys trans compared to rebuilt others. But $2100 is hard to swallow.
