Looking for some information on how many spline axles I need to run in my car.
I have a 88 stang that weighs about 3200lbs with me in it. I plan on running mid to high 9's with the car and I'm not sure what to do about axles. The car has a 9" with 31 spline moser axles and spool. Do you guys think those axles will be good enough for my plans? I' m going to be running a trans-brake and nitrous. I will be running on street tires(Hoosier Quick-Times) so that will limit how hard I push the car on the starting line.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. I don't want to run out and buy new axles and a spool if I really don't need to.
thanks everybody.

33 or 35 spline... dont risk it with 31s..

Moser is telling me that my 31 spline axles should be fine under that load.
They are estimating my motor at about 800ft/lbs of torque and that is probably on the high side. They said that their 31 spline axles should be fine.
What is the worst case scenario if I break an axle?
Thanks for the help

no, worst case scenario is break an axle and hit the wall.. I would upgrade, but thats me..

I think you will be fine with 31 spline axles. There are a lot of guys turning low numbers with a lot of horsepower and only running stock axles. Not a good idea however. Obviously it would be an ease of mind thing running a 33 or 35 that there isn't much chance you will break one, but that is up to you. Worst case I have seen is a were the axle broke mid shaft and the wheel put the car sideways into the side rail. For this reason a lot of guys like to run c clip eliminators in case the axle shaft breaks in the tube, your wheel and hub will stay with the car. Any way you look at it, it all comes down to your safety and the safety of others at the track. Hope this helps.

What's the cost to upgrade? Probably a whole lot less than if you snap an axle and the car makes an unexpected left turn into the wall... or worse.

if you decide to go with 31s, for God's sake don't go with Moser. If I were to do it again, I'd go with big fat 33 or 35. They take a bit more to turn, but you can always make up for it with a bit bigger shot of nitrous :burnout:

even with c-clip elims, the car will head towards the wall..
the spool or differential will apply power to one wheel while the other is just sitting there..
I have seen MANY 11-12 sec cars break 31s... thats my concern..

Have you had bad experiences with the moser 31 spline axles? I was actually planning on buying some moser axles in the near future, so let me know if that is a bad choice. I have heard really bad things about superior axles, but not stange and moser.
Flyin' - I guess I have just seen more guys tear out a torque box or break something else on the car before snapping an axle, so I just didn't see a 31 spline as the weakest link. I guess not having it ever happen to me makes me put too much faith in my 31 spline axles. Then again I don't have a 9 or 10 sec. car for that matter running low 60ft times with massive amounts of low end torque. It all comes down to the same thing, your better off spending the money on the better parts the first time rather than waiting for the cheaper ones to break.

His car has a 9" rearend. How much Hp & Tq will it handle ???????

Hmmm, now I don't know about 31 spline. This topic has got me wanting to know more about axles and rear ends, so I was reading an article on one of the ford racing websites and they say that a ford 9" with 31 spline axles will be able to handle up to 400rwhp. Thats not going to produce a 9 sec car.
After doing some reading I would NOT recommend 31 spline for your application.

it will depend what 9" you have. big or small bearing, how long yor axles are & who makes the axle.
I replaced my strange 31 spline axles last winter. they were twisted big time. I replaced them with mark williams 35 spline light weight axles that ended up weighing less than the strange 31 spline axles that I took out.
www.markwilliams.com lots of good tech info on drive line stuff.

I run Moser 33 spline axles with 5/8" wheel studs in my Real Street car. Like Bob said, I didn't want to have any problems and hit the wall because of a broken axle.
The 33's are the same price as the 31's. I see you already have 31's, but I would run 33's or better.

I have not, because I bought Strange, lol ;)
But I've seen wayyyyyy too many cars, many not that fast, break Mosers over the years.

I like my strange axles, but moser is the only one that makes a fox length 5 lug. I called strange, but they only have 94-95 axles in 5 or 5 lug c clip elim's in 5 lug which I don't want. Soooooo, I don't know what to do. Any ideas?

I ran 33spline MOSER axles for 4 years... 3200-3400lbs 1.27-1.30 60ft... i sold them to go with STRANGE gun drilled, scalloped, 5/8 stud axles..
if you go with 33, moser is fine

thanks for all the posts guys.
I do have the big bearing 31 spline Moser Axles, but I'm starting to wonder about upgrading even though Moser tells me they are fine.
Since 33 spline and 35 spline are the same price would it make more sense to just buy the 35 spline axles?
Do you run into any clearance problems in the housing with 35 spline axles?
I would like some opinions on Moser axles. I see QTRMILE does not like them, and flyin Hawaiin switched from Moser to Strange. I have never heard anything bad about Moser, but I would like some educated opinions.
Thanks again

stock = kmart
Moser = sears
Strange = Matco
Mark Williams = snap-on
best analogy i could come up with

Make sure you know what size bearings your carrier will take. If you go with 35 spline axles you have to use a 3.25" bearing in the carrier. 33 and less with work with the 3.08" or whatever size the bigger stock casing is. When i bought my old car the guy had just bought all new axles for it cuz he had broken one. He had just upgraded from 31 spline to 35. I thought.....cool, now i've got better axles. When i went to set up the rear end i couldn't get it to go together. I wound up having to sell the Strange steel case and buy a new one to accomodat the bigger bearings needed for the 35 spline axles. This was about 7 years ago so maybe things have chanced since then. But be sure you order axles that will fit in your carrier or you might be buying a new one of those too!

Thats pretty dam good.
So you were running 33 spline Moser's in your car that ran in the 8's?
That is faster than I plan on going by a long shot.

Spline size depends on the weight of the car and the torque it makes. I ran 35 spline, and that's where i ran into the problems. Had i ran 33 they would have fit in an OEM "big bearing" case. 35 and larger require an aftermarked center section with the 3.25" bearings.
PS....i wasn't sure if you were talking to me or Bob so i just clarified what i said. And any car running in the 8's should have 35 spline or larger. 33's will probably be fine well into the 9's.....but that would depend the factors i mentioned earlier.

I was looking at a set of Mark William's Masterline Axles. I have a link posted below to check them out.
I was going to buy the 35 spline and spool, MW says that their 35's will fit into a stock carrier. I plan on double checking to make sure.
My question is that when I emailed MW they said I should run 40 spline axles and spool. I was totally amazed by that. I don't think I need 40 spline at all.
One other thing I wanted to add was that this car will be driven on the street occasionally. NOt sure if that changes anything.
I also posted a link to the Axle Tech that MW has. They have a question and answer about fitting a 35 spline spool and axles into a stock 9" housing.
Please let me know if you guys think these axles will be good enough.
