View Full Version : Has anyone run a 351w in a 64 to 66??
I have a 66' a Fastback that I'd really like to put a stroked windsor in. It's going to be a 5spd w/ a cable clutch and a Fatman strut front end, but I'm leaving the stock shock towers in. So has anybody run a 351w and if so what oil pan, headers, intake, carb & air cleaner combo? Did or would the headers clear a scattersheild? Also was there any hood clearence problems?
Thanks in advance,

I ran a 351W in my 65. I made a set of motor mounts and used a factory front sump oil pan. I had a victor jr. intake with a 750 holley. Hooker did make a set of headers for this swap and I'm sure they still do. Be ready to use a portapower to spread the shock towers apart. All of the old mustangs have saggy shock towers.
Thanks for the info. Did you have any hood clearence problems? Also did you have any problems with the rear spring mounts? i.e would it be a good idea to reinforce them? I'm planning on 500+hp at the wheels in a 2500# car and if I bolt slicks or Drag radials on it I'd hate to rip the mounts out. :thud:

Yes there were minor hood clearance issues. I had to put a small scoop on the hood. I don't remember if the air cleaner was a drop base or not and don't remember if I ran a carb spacer on the car so it may clear the stock hood. Without an air cleaner it will for sure. Definitely reinforce the spring mounts and put an 8 point roll bar in the car. Failure to address chassis reinforcement with that much horsepower will result in doors that don't open and shut anymore as well as cracked windshield pillars. That 5 speed isn't going to last long either.
It has a Shelby hood and I'm hoping that will be enough. I have already put in a 6 point bar with the main hoop over the torque boxes and Totalcontrol subframe connectors I was just wondering about the front spring eye mounts. There are 2 3/8in spot welds from the factory and was wondering if the mounts should be welded all the way around. I have G-Force internals waiting for the T-5 so that shouldn't be a problem. Did you have any bellhousing clearance issues with the headers, most the swap headers say there for C4 applications only? I know the flange on the scattershields sticks out farther than a cast bell which I'm willing to grind on a little but you can only go so far. I'm more worried about my feet than rules compliance.
Thanks again for all your help :worshippy

I would weld and reinforce as much as possible. Those cars weren't built to take a lot of power. I ran a C4 behind mine so I can't answe your header questions but you might have some bellhousing to tunnel clearance issues with the safety bell. Shouldn't be anything too major though.
