On ebay, many people sell these electric superchargers, as seen here:

What do you think of this? They say it can add up to 20hp. Not that I'm totally interested in buying one, but don't you think this would blow too much air into the engine and make it lean out?

JUNK/SCAM- don't even think about it.
Its about as bad as hooking a an electric leave blower. I am positive you will see NO gains.
It's like a Tornado(remeber that product)? SUppose to add 20 horse...yeah right. If it sounds too good to be true, it robably is. Look to spend your money on other small bolt ons.

I would bet $ that it would make less hp with it on the motor, because I think it would be a restriction to the air flowing into the motor.

For sure Mark. Impeller speeds on true superchargers are many times what a 2-pole 1:1 drive motor could produce, those things can't move anywhere near enough air to create positive pressure in the intake manifold.

thats what I figured. I wasn't interested in putting it on my car, I just wondered if it was true or not. I had my skeptical ideas, I just wanted to confirm them.

Electric supercharging isn't totally snake oil but not for larger engines.

I know a guy that bought a leaf blower and pullied it. It was a Saturn that started out with 90 rwhp and with the blower it made 100rwhp. Pretty good gain for that car. He actually saw no boost just a little less vacuum.

complete junk. theres no way a electric motor of that size can even make boost at 1000 rpm let alone 4 or 5k. theres no cheap way for good performance so dont take the risk.

Oh ya.
Hey SHO, what do you have done to you SHO? I just cut out the air box on my wife's 97 SHO. That is a GREAT mod! It sounds so much better!
That one is a scam.
The key word is "similar"
The real electric SC's are built like a mini twin screw and have their own 12v power supply.

You mean like this one Electric Supercharger article (http://www.turbomagazine.com/tech/0406tur_knight/)
Here's a thought, a hybrid Civic with that 144 Volt battery pack. Tie an electric supercharger into that. Very little weight penalty.
Here's one with what appears to be very little weight penalty and a big boost for those tiny euro home market engines. OEM Electric Supercharger (http://www.visteon.com/products/automotive/media/vtes_spec.pdf)
The drawback of electric supercharging is weight and the inablilty to feed a large engine. The benifit for a small car is power boost when you need it and no parisitic drag when you don't.
