Greg, since you work at the track I have a question about being teched in. This Saturday Tony and I are going to the track, my friend wants to come with in his `71 Chevelle SS with a 502 (4-spd) that kicks out some serious power! My question is, will he get pass tech with just lap seat belts? He will run on his stock 215/60/15 Firestone's unless he gets time to put on his draglites that have 28" tire on it, but it's just a cheapy street tire, not a DR, (275/60/15). He never ran it before, he just got some Lakewood latterbars if that makes a difference, but nothing else, not even a helmet, but he'll be borrowing mine if they let him race. this car has a lot of torque, and easy to say it's the fastest car i've riden in. This is a potential 11 second car, 10's on slicks, but on street tires, it may be a 12 second car. So what do you think Greg, can he run it? He said he wants to get one or two runs and will never bring it to the track again afterwards, because he likes as a streetable car.

Since the car has never been run, and he's running in what amounts to "test and tune" he should pass tech as far as being able to race, however once he makes a pass, if he runs quicker than 11.59 then things will change and he will need a whole slew of things before he can run again.

FWIW- if this was some sort of IHRA sanctioned event like a bracket race or National event, then before he would be allowed to compete, he would have to pass stringent tech. Test and tune is not that way. When he techs in, Jerry's going to look for a coolant catch-can and may ask what the ET potential is, but if the guy does not even know, it's all subjective. The crew will watch your friend's passes and if he can go 13.99 or quicker, then the crew will tell him to either wear a helmet or slow down. And if he goes quicker than 11.59, then they will tell him he has to slow down or stop racing.

Tell him to make sure there is a coolant catch can or overflow bottle, that is very important. Everything else is going to be subject to how me runs once he passes thru tech.

Thanx Greg. I'm curious what it can do. The engine has been dyno's with 588hp and 725ft/lbs!
He use to not have a catch can for the coolant, but I rigged up this 1/2 gallon milk jug for him and it works fine and has been there for a year. The engine/header heat doesn't melt it, it's next to the battery tuck in the fender with a zip tie  But it works.
Thanx again buddy, see ya at the track this weekend hopefully :thumbs_up

Tony, I haven't got my chip back yet! I might have to run this weekend without it  The guy hasn't even shipped it yet and it's already Wednesday.

I should, I don't know what to expect as far as how many Machs will show up. Might only be a few, might be ten or more. Many of the people from my the Mach1 sites are going to Nashville...

I know me, Alex, Vince, Brian, Jeff and two guys from Chicago are planning to come, so that makes 7. We'll see how it goes but I can make time if you wish. I am going to be running on a much better tire though. Expect very different results for me. :)

Did you get some DR's Greg??
Are any old Mach1's from the `70's that are going to be there?

Should be all "new age" Machs doood. I do have Nittos, not DR's, a set of Road Race tires... I cut better 60's on them with the Cobra than I did with the Nitto Dr's...

Really? Aren't the street racing tires the same soft compound as the normal 555r, but with stiffer sidewalls?

No, the NT555 Extreme II's are the same compound and tread as the Drag radials, but they have a reinforced sidewall to limit flex in the corners....
