I plan on painting my engine bay on my mustang. this is not a show car like Dan's car is. it's more of a daily driver/race car. I just want to do something now that I have my motor out of the car.
I would like to use a semi gloss black paint out of a spray can. maybe rust-oleum or?
should I sand off the old paint.
should I use a primer?
I will clean everything good before I paint it, just don't know how much prep work I need to do before the paint.

Thanks Mark

if your looking to just dress things up. i would scuff the surface and clean it well ( acetone) throw on a quick primer, then paint
really how much are you going to see after the engines back in
i would also suggest that you get the paint cans that have the adjustable tip

if you can get ur hands on a pressure washer do that. then scuff it w/ a red scuff pad from 3m. try to stay away from degreaser's and any other toxic materials, as they will be a total pain to complety get off metal. u only need to prime if you are to bare metal and you only need to seal if you go use primer. if your car is a dark color you dont need to put down a darker coat. if it is like white it will take a lil more paint to cover. although black will almost put a nice coat on anything. dont be afraid to try it, especially if your just doing it to dress it up!! good luck..

make sure you use some type of final clean to remove any oil left from your hands or motor if you dont you are going to have a big mess to try and fix and dont just get any primer you will need a etching primer on bare meatal be fore you paint it with a filler type primer or you can spray over the etching primer with black all is avalable in cans if you take your time it will turn out fine with spray cans

good luck

Show car?????

Damn, if you saw the rest of it, you'd agree its not show worthy. I have a show car engine in a shitbox body. Anyway, like the others said, clean it, scuff it, shoot it! If you have a spray gun, use that. We used self etching primer, and sprayed single stage ChromaOne. I bet you could get a pint of black cheap.

just pulling your leg Dan, I know Darrell has a frim grip on your other leg....

I don't have a spray gun so the cans will have to do.
I'm going to get some stuff at napa & give it a shot today.

thanks guys Mark

im in the process of painting the under side they make a gloss black that can be used it is hard as nails and be used on rust.

the hard part is getting all the old oil off. i have been working on it for two weeks 2 hr a night and only have half the car done. i have tried every degreaser. brake clean works the best but is expensive. good luck. i do own a hot water pressure washer but its at work and im to lazy to bring it home. plus the fumes would get bad in the shop. it uses diesel fuel. plus i would make a mess in all over. i use my hot water in the shop that helps. good luck. get some rubber gloves also.

Old body shop trick, cleans and scuffs at the same time. Go to any automotive paint supply store and get the red scuff pads. Then pick up a can of Comet. Wet the pad add some comet and scuff. The comet does three things. Keeps the pad clean, cleans the paint as you scrub and does a lil scuff work of it's own. There's a product out called Final sand (at least there was when I did body work) that works the exact same way but it costs more. The comet won't make up for not degreasing it but it will help catch anything you may have missed.
