Ok guys, looking for some input & your experience with 8.8 rearends.

I think, I'll use a set of 31 spline axles, unless I need more strength.

What have you used ???? How did you like it & what do you suggest ????

My combo is a stock shortblock, with a T-5 & drag radials that is street & strip minded to the tune of about 3,000 miles a year. I may use slicks after the rearend upgrade.

What would be a good choice for my car ?????

Thanks All :D

I got a FRPP 31 spline unit which it about the same thing out of exploders, should last me a few years till I can hang with the big boys then I will need something a bit more beffy. But if your gonna stay with C-Clips I think its the beast bang for the buck.

Honestly I would keep the c-clips in. I have 31 spline with eaton and would do it again in a sec. When have you seen 31 spline axles break?

I installed a Detroit Locker in my 91 LX, I think in 1998, ran it until I sold it last year. It replaced an Auburn. The Detroit Locker was bullit proof, very strong, but it was very harsh also, was like an on/off switch. It made a lot of noise driving it around on the street, but the noises were normal to that type of locker. The newer styles might be more quiet, I'm not sure, but the things are built very strong and when it locked up, it was locked up!

If you want bang for the buck, I agree with Joel, the ford truck 31 spline diff is pretty tough. Pack it with extra clutch discs and good to go. You can find the carriers used for $100-150 online sometimes.

I had heard good things about the Eaton, but just pulled one out in about 100 peices on a bolt-on 01 GT. I have heard of several others going.

The Auburns I hear mixed reviews about also. Some people swear by them, other people swear about them.

The tru-trak is one no one has mentioned. Not rebuildable, but also no clutches that can wear out. Quiet and nice manners on the street.

Now I have to agress with Sonic on the C-locker, tough as nails. But you have to live with it's attitude it gives you on the street. But mine has been holding up to 6500 RPM launches on slicks for 3 years now.

Yep, I just picked up a 31 spline unit, with 15000 miles on it, for $100. Ebay!

Nick I am going with a 31 spline truck diff. I bought elim axles and everything from andr50. I figured if he was gonna use it on his 10 sec car they will be plenty good for my high 11 low 12 sec car.

Hey Nico! My set up is very affordable. Brand new Moser 31-spline axles with 3" studs for $245 shipped, then i found on EBay a `99 V8 Explorer 31-spline carrier for $70 shipped, then bought some carbon fiber clutches for $60, so my set up was only $375  I was already looking at a Detriot True-Trac, no clutches or spider gears. http://www.jawsgear.net/store/catalog/index.php?cPath=31_189_239

I've seen them let go. Not a 31 spline though. Not worth the leaks from c-clips IMHO. If they don't leak then good but they will and when they do it will never stop..lol

That's why you get 9" housing ends.

I have 8.8's in both my cars with Moser C-clip eliminators and neither one leaks. Have patience, attention to detail and follow directions and you will have no issues.

I had strange that did not leak at all. It has alot to do with how true the parts are also. IE; housing ends and backing plates. You can make them work well, but 9 inch ends are the end all be all......

Thanks for all the replies guys. :D My old coupe used the Strange axles & C-clip eliminators & still does not leak to this day. I also used an Explorer 31 spline posi unit in the car & it worked very well. I have a friend that has a coupe with a truck T-lock with extra clutches that worked very well in a 11 sec motor & 10 spray application. The only thing was when he took it apart last time to check everything out, he was very lucky. There were 13 hair line cracks in one of the spider gears. They all had some cracks. I'm not wanting to take that chance. I drive my car to & from the track. I'm use to a tight T-lock that makes noise going around the courners. That doesn't bother me in the least. Just like it to apply the power. Sounds like maybe the way to go is with the Detroit unit. Bob, did you run 9's with a 31 spline axle ??????

Thanks All

I ran 10 teens with the 31 spline 1.41 60 foots. I changed to 33 spline and 9 inch ends the end of last year. 31 spline will last in a soft leaving car, and if the car is heavy that will take alot of life from them also. I personally would use them in a light fox body doen to the mid tens, then I would think of getting a race axel.....

Mike has 31 spline axles in his truck. Luckly it doesn't leave very hard.
