View Full Version : engine vibration

I recently performed a AOD to t-5 conversion. The problem I'm having is that there is a vibration at idle and comes in and out at higher rpm's, 2k being the worst. I have a cheaper clutch, pp, and flywheel in the car now, but will be replacing the parts when I get a better trans. According to my parts source, the clutch, pp, and flywheel are correct, and look like the factory parts (comparing flywheels). My question is, if I had a bad harmonic balancer, could it have been masked by the original torque converter? It's not a big deal to pull it off and inspect it, but just wondering if I'm heading in the right direction. I'm thinking that the fluid in the t/c would dampen the vibration from the engine. Also, I know the vibration was not this bad before, but still may have been there. Anyone have any ideas?
The vibration feels rotational. I'll get a hertz measurement tonight.

i found a flywheel out of balance because it was .020 thicker on one side and it was a used flywheel mis ground, it was 122 grams out and i have found bad or mis installed trans mount to do the same thing thanks

They also have different driveshafts. Not sure if it matters but it might. The AOD have a big weight on the front of it
Did you use the dowel pins that align the Pressure Plate to the Flywheel? Is it possible that you may have the wrong flywheel? (28oz. vs. 50oz.)

When you were pulling the trans and had the trans mount out your fan didnt hit the shroud and maybe break? If you are still running the stock fan that is.

This vibration happens at all time, more so in neutral, or clutch in. It is spose to be a remaned flywheel, but I never took mic measurements to see if it was ground correctly. I think I'm going to return it and just get a FRPP flywheel. I have an electric fan, so it should not be a problem. Thanks for all the input guys, but I think a better flywheel is the way to go at this time. I have heard a bunch of stories from guys at work about the cheap reman flywheels not being ground correctly and/or warped.

How's your water pump? If the bearings are going it'll give you a nasty vibration. Perhaps it's just a coincidence that it's gotten worse after the swap. Just a thought.

I would really, really investigate the you have the properly balanced flywheel, if it was ok before and jacked now I would think you have a 28 oz instead of a 50oz imbalance.

Another stab in the dark, maybe check the engine/tranny mounts too. Im sure they could have twisted or deteriorated since the swap.
