View Full Version : Horsepower estimate on blown 427w?

I posted a while back about the blown 427w. The motor is being built as we speak. I decided to go with these new brodix heads (225cc model)-http://www.brodix.com/2005catalog/7-8.html-, hydraulic roller cam, victor junior intake, and 750 cfm blow through carb. I have not picked out an exact cam yet, suggestions on lift and duration are welcome. I am going to go with an s-trim pullied to spin it to the max, and I am also going to run methonal injection. Anyone with a ball park guess on horsepower and torque? Any other suggestions would also be appreciated.
Thanks

My guess would be 520 rwhp. The S-trim is just too small for that motor. If it was fuel injected I would guess quite a bit higher though.

I was told by Gorden at superior airflow that this is the carb to use. It was used on the 347 turbo blow through car that went sevens in the quarter mile.

Check that link out. Says it supports 700-1200 horsepower.

The blow through carb set ups are making just as much power as the fuel injected setups from what I have seen. I talked to Anderson Ford Motorsports and I was told to run a 2.95 blower pulley and an 8 inch crank pulley, and they said I should see at least 10 lbs of boost.

Just to compare, I'm running a 750 on my 327. But thats NA, dunno how blowthrough affects it.
I know it sounds really small, but I was assured this was the right one.

How much HP did he think it would make? I am going by the HP my brother truck made with a P600 procharger(about the same size asa S-trim) on a 418. He had it cranked,. He saw 12lbs max and witha FAST,and a nice F.I. setup he only made 560rwhp(through a C6)

He said with methanal injection and that pulley setup with 10-12lbs of boost I should be able to make close to 600 at the wheels. I made sure he knew it was a blow through carb setup. I have a C4 prepped by TSI for a trans.

I don't have a clear idea of what it is going to make, so I am asking as many people as I can. That pulley setup is also overspinning the blower quite a bit.

Isn't boost just a resistance number anyway? If I am getting most of that air in their and not making a lot of boost isn't that better?

I was told the very most RWHP a S-trim could make was 580rwhp(according to Bennett) The problem with running a blower that is too small(what I have seen with Mike's truck) it that you have to over spin the blower to see even 10lbs of boost, so basically you pump in HEAT!

That is were methanol injection comes into play though. It will cool down that hot charge created by the blower without resistance like an intercooler, making more power. That is my understanding of it, but I am a beginner.

Anyone have an idea on cam size?

Like I said, custom will be the way to go. Contact Ed Curtis @ www.FlowtechInduction.com or Jay Allen @ www.CamshaftInnovations.com , these guys are the gods of the cam world. Think of it this way, the cam is the brain of the engine, why would you settle for an off the shelf cam for this high end engine?

If you can't make at least 600 rwhp on a blown 427 my advice would be to start over, find a new engine builder/tuner. I made 548 RWHP and 518 RWTQ on my fuelie 331 with 8 lbs of boost. So on a 427 with good heads, (ditch the carb in my opinion), ditch the s-trim too, get intercooled, you should WELL be over 600.
If you can rev that motor to at least 6,000 rpm, have head flow well in excess of 300 cfm and 220 exhaust, with at least 8 lbs of boost, you should make way more than 600 rwhp. If you need to go with a Vortech, then with that many cubes, go with at LEAST a T-trim, if not a YS-trim.
Best of luck to you, and hope you get the numbers you are looking for!!!

First off it sounds like a cool project. What kind of car is this going in?
I would agree if you still have to buy a blower and want a Vortech buy a T, YS or YSi trim. The S-trim will be the part of equasion that will eventually limit the power production. A guy I know has a S-trim car maxed out. He tested Andersons alky injection kit on 93 and is at 581rwhp & 522rwtq. He is at the limit of the S-trim. The larger blower will just be more efficient at the air flow levels you are after.
A lot of guys are using carb blow through set ups with great sucess. Good luck with yours.

Hey guys! Sorry I have not posted in a while, but I figured I would update everyone on how the setup worked last year. Tuning was easy, to say the very least, and it made a very respectable amount of power for having an s-trim on such a large motor. The car was very streetable also, I always drove it to and from the track, to work, and on cruises. I dynoed the setup with less timing and more fuel than I ran on my best pass, and it made 555rwhp with only 10psi. (With the added timing and leaner air/fuel, I imagine it would have laid done somewhere around 580rwhp if I would have gotten it redynoed) My best pass was 9.921 @ 137.5 mph with a 1.49 60ft. This year calls for a much needed blower change-cogged YSi, a bigger cam, and suspension tuning. Hope this year goes as smooth as last year went for me. I hope to see you guys at the track!

Do it! Just make sure you get the right stuff, and it will work great for you. Oh yeah, drop that compression down to around 9.5:1 also. :thumbs_up

Very nice! That YSi should be better matched for that 427. Good luck with it.

Thanks a lot guys! I think the cam and blower was really holding the car back last year. According to the dyno, my peak power was made at only 5500rpm! I hope to make power well past that this year. Thanks again, and see ya at the track Greg. :burnout:

Awesome video!!! I have seen it before and I LOVE IT!!! Like I said earlier Mike's truck was MAXED out at 580 with the P600 and with just a swtich to a F1R(THIS WOULD BE PERFECT FOR YOU TOO) He made 823rwhp.

I hope to be in that range this year for horsepower also, and the YSi should be plenty capable of doing it. If by some wierd chance I do want more power, I would go with an F2, but I don't think I will need any more. Your bro's truck is cool, I watched the 9.8X pass just now.

Greg, I'm doing well, except for the fact that I have a car with no motor or trans in it right now. :thud: What are your plans for this year?
