View Full Version : Kenne Bell'd GT is running!

Well, the KB is done. 16 hours from start to hitting boost for the first time.
All I can say is the car is f'ing nuts!
No traction whatsoever with the Nittos in 1st and 2nd! And these are 315/35/17s!!!
Fighting a rough idle/missing issue in the lower rpms, in contact w/ Kenne Bell to possibly iron it out. Could also be an ignition issue. Replaced one coil-on-plug unit when unplugging it didn't hurt the idle at all. But the new unit still doesn't have a negative effect when unplugged
But, when it reaches about 10-8" of vacuum it runs better and then into boost it's a damn rocket. But overall driveability is suffering with the idle/low RPM issue. If anyone has some insight into what it might be, I'd appreciate it. Gotta go get it scanned and check the adaptive fuel/fuel trim measurements and that might help discover an air leak if there is one.
Exhaust got much louder too.
here's some pics.

Looks very nice!
Suggestion: Get that car on a dyno ASAP and make sure your A/F ratio is safe.
I wouldn't hammer it too much until you know how your tune is. Did you get any sort of electronics with the kit such as a chip?

Looks great! That's the same one I have and I love it! Like Greg said...Make sure you get it dynoed to get everything set up right. The only thing that sucks is when the the rev limiter kicks in...LOL

yeah, I got Kenne Bell's switch chip. She'll go on the dyno once I figure out the low-rpm problem. I think i fixed it some, replaced some vacuum line with some smaller diameter stuff and it runs better but not perfect down-low. Guess I'll be hunting for leaks some more...
If all goes well, I'll have it dynod this week.

Can't wait to see the number's , where are you going to dyno it at ??

Looks Great!! Congrats!
Couple of questions.. Did the kit come with the KB Boost-a-Pump and injectors?
What throttle body do you have?
The low rpm stumble "closed loop" is a common problem with blower cars.
The trhottle bodies although a pretty much bolt on part sometimes may need some idle adjustments. The dyno will tell you a great deal. Congrats Again :burnout:

yep, came with the BAP & injectors.
I'm running an Accufab 75mm TB, TPS voltage is .98 closed.
Running better, but not great... sounds like it's running on 7 cylinders.

You know about the Kenne Bell tech section over at modularfords right? If not thats a great place for answers straight from KB about your troubles. I know they have had some problems with the low-RPM hesitation (if that is infact what your experiencing) but they may have had that worked out by the time yours was shipped. either way you can send in your chip (again, if that is the problem) and they will re-burn it or give you a new one with the fix.

yep, I've been there a lot and have been in contact with Ken C. about my low-RPM issues. He thinks it's an air leak somewhere, which I found one and fixed, but it's still not running right.
Once i get it scanned I should know more.

Thanks for the great comments guys! The thing is a damn rocket now, so fun!! Yeah, it whines, I love it! The whistle at idle is sweet too!
Think I got my low-rpm problem figured out! Adam(quietflow) scanned the car for me. Got Slow bank 2 o2, rich bank 2, fuel trim was way out of whack for bank 2, and I'm pretty damn sure that changing the o2 should fix it...if not, it's a good start to have this information. Since my brain is fried, bank 2 should be driver's side, correct, I believe that's what Adam said. Just want to be 100% sure.
So Adam, thanks again!!! Very much appreciated!

No problem!!! Ill check to make sure but I am pretty sure bank 2 is considered the drivers side.

how was the install?
sacstoy02gt

how was the install?
Install was great! Kenne Bell's instructions are top-notch, just like everyone says. Each step is descried well and doesn't miss a thing.
There were some tough parts though. The intercooler stuff sucked. Running some of the hoses were a major PITA. Removing the computer was a chore(I didn't do it, my friends Nick and Josh did, and it took forever). The most tedious things are the wiring and gauges. The blower install is a piece of cake, it's all wrenching. It was only noon when the blower was torqued down.
The whole install, from first bolt removal(hood) until hitting boost for the first time took 16 hours. This included gauge install also. The directions were incorrect on the idler pulleys that they supply, but Sat. morning we found a supplement that they sent with for the new idlers they're using. Somehow I never noticed that when going through all my paperwork beforehand.
It's definitely worth doing yourself. I would feel sick paying someone to follow those directions that make it so easy. Plus, it's a hell of a feeling of accomplishment when you turn the key and it fires right up!
I also put in my super-sexy sequential turn signals this weekend. We were too pooped to tackle the control arms. so they'll wait for next weekend or so.

you will have a hard time getting KB to admit that the chip is wrong. they will tell you that you have a vacume leak but you do not. you need to get rid of the chip and get some other type of tuning device. you need to go get you car dynoed by someone that uses the same chip (autologic) i beleave and let them burn a new chip on the dyno. Kb does not have the best cust service. good luck

i just dynoed a 2002 GT with a kenne bell... we made a baseline pull with the Kenne Bell chip and it was SAD.... we ended up making 70rwhp MORE with 4 degree's less timing.. GET IT to the dyno and get it tuned..

Yeah, doesn't surprise me one bit!
Since Marv is close to me I've got him tuning it the first week in May.
Thanks for the info Bob. What'd it make after it was tuned?

Isnt that the oil/air separator?

That's the intercooler coolant reservoir. Pump sits right below it.

it was 311 rwhp with the kenne bell chip.. we pulled it 2times to confirm.. it was sad.. it made 381rwhp after... again, with 4 degree's less timing..

Wow! That's awful.
That'll be a safe tune with 4 deg. less!
This little survey says a bit about the KB tunes...

The car Bob is talking about is mine...before going I was having idle and code troubles, but had them all fixed before the dyno. I did a propane and smoke test for vacuum leaks, had a bad egr gasket and replaced it. Car was much better then and between 19-20 lbs of vac at idle.
The Kenne Bell tune was horrible... The dyno measured a/f ratio down to 10, and it was off the charts (rich) right after idle. Bob's tune is way better, although 381 at the rears is still low for the car. I'm wondering what the problem could be, no clue yet. It is like a different car with Bob's tune, much improved.

Good to hear things are much better.
Mine's way rich as well, but still not horrible numbers, here's my last dyno run:

Hoping for some darn good numbers when I get it tuned in 2 weeks.

I've still got the off road X pipe I took off. Maybe one day I'll get bored, slap it back in and put it on a dyno to see how much difference it makes. I agree, that would probably get me close to the 400 mark.
I'd probably need ear plugs to drive the car though!

In my case, I dyno'd 370rwhp with my Mac O/R H. Put the stock H back on, dyno'd 374.5.
Probably mostly weather difference; but I'm leaving the stock H on.
And with 3-chamber flows...nothing like a low 12 second sleeper :D

To be honest, I could get by without the earplugs...ears are trashed from being near too many IED's and gunfights in Iraq.
Had them tested before I left and after getting back...lost 10 decibels across the board.

Actually, my supervisor was an ex-army ranger, crossed over into the airforce a couple of years ago. anyway, he is almost completely deaf in his left ear. Just came out of nowhere too. I would hate to loose my hearing. Hope you dont loose any more man, be careful.
