At GLD, my last race I did after leaving the water box I was told later after the race only one of my tires was spinning, the passenger side, even though I have an auburn posi unit. I have no grinding or funny noises of any kind. Yesterday I had my diff. cover off and there were no metal shavings. Any suggestions?

When auburns take a **** They are pretty much junk. I think you can send them in to be redone at auburn but I am not sure. For a street car get a FMS posi so you can toss some new clutches in yourself when it wears out much more userfriendly. It only takes one bad burnout to trash an auburn....

The auburn can fry even without making any funny or unusual sounds?

Yeah, when the clutches go, you are stuck with on wheel peel syndrome. It's easy to repack clutches in a diff. New clutches run $50-$75.

i dont think the auburn has clutches

the auburn doesn't have clutches.

mine has done that a few times also. sometimes you can contribe that to getting one tire in the water better than the other one, but that excuse isn't always true. the rest of the guys are right though.........when an auburn goes, it goes. and there is no rebuilding them yourself. i've been on mine for 5 years now, but my car is slow.

when you had the cover off the other day to check it out. when you filled it back up did you put in the friction additive for the posi unit in the gear lube.
not that it will help now, I was just wondering.

oh yes, I definitely made sure to add the friction modifier.

Mine went out with a bang. Literally. I totally destroyed my spider gears. The whole car smelled like a burned clutch.

My Auburn Pro has cone looking things instead of the standard "clutch".

IMO the Auburn is well worth the $$$ and I will buy another one when I do my 93.

I think my passenger side spider gears are still ok because my car still moves ok, but if I take a turn fast I gear a whiney grinding noise.

I don't like them beacuse they are not user friendly. A clutch type posi can be rebuilt in your garage with minimal tools, while you have to send an auburn in.

Fritz from FSR (the ad above some of the forums) says he can rebuild it.

FWIW I replaced my junk Auburn with an Eaton. So far I love it. I can't wait to get to the track with it in a couple weeks.

OK folks. I did some checking around and here is the word on the Auburn unit.

According to one of Auburn's suppliers there are no rebuild kits available and the unit is not rebuildable. I was told that what happens is the cone wears into the carrier and the unit needs to be replaced.

At least with the Eaton or Ford units you can get replacement parts fairly easy.

I said that many posts ago. Actually post #2. Thanks for reassuring me though... I sure was curious how you were going to rebuild his. :thud:

If it can be rebuilt, I can rebuild it (or at least I'd like to believe I can).

I always heard that you had to send them in to be rebuilt, so I thought I'd check into saving the shipping charges and doing it myself. It never hurts to look into it.

man that sucks. So I suppose I should just buy a different posi unit. Maybe a T-lok since those are rebuildable.

Your best bet is to put in a PowerTraxs limited slip. It is like a Detroit locker but not so sloppy. It is a mechanical unit and holds like no other. But will still let you turn corners with ease.
