I am doing an intake gasket a '97 4.6L in the very near future.

Anybody have the torque specs and sequence for it?

Anything specific I need to watch out for?

Are there aftermarket intakes available for them? The owner is curious about a metal style intake. I didn't think there was one available.

Are there any other known common causes of coolant leaks that would fill ramdon spark plug holes? I am already aware of the intakes blowing holes(Just covering bases here, nothing otherwise implied)

Anyone have a shop change one, if so what did they charge you?

It shouldn't be too hard. I can get you the torque specs and sequence right out of the Ford shop manual.

There are some aftermarket intake manifolds, I think 5.0 Mustang and Super Fords did a comparo on a couple not too long ago.

I can't think of anything specific to watch out for off the top of my head.

That's an interesting coolant leak. I don't know what else would do that.

Well the intake blew a hole and as he put it "some fat azz slob" put the new one on. I don't think the area was prepped properly nor do I think the torque specs were followed. Every couple months he call me and says the car is miss firing and the CEL is on. I plug my scanner in and it tells me what cylinder. I pull that plug wire and there is always coolant up to the top of the plug. Always a different one, never the same one twice in a row.

If you could provide those specs, that would be moocho helpful! Thanx

you could try a Hanes manual

Yes I most certainly could...

I don't have one and the owner isn't about to buy one and that is why it is posted here. :grinch:

There are only a small few cast aluminum manifolds for the 4.6 2v and they will all run you over $1,000 except for the plastic PI manifold ($150). The 96-98 are the NPI's.
-You have the plastic PI manifold that came on the 99-04 GT's, the mid 01-04 have the aluminum crossover, the plastic ones were prone to cracking and leaking.
-You have the Bullitt manifold off the 2001 Bullitt GT
-You have the P-51 by Fox Lake, comes with aftermarket fuel rails
-And the Reichard Racing, (high rpm manifold).
I think there's another made from FRPP?

I recommend a PI intake, they are cheap and make decent power (15-20rwhp) on the NPI (96-98) 2V heads!

Here is the torque specs and sequence, 18ft/lbs.

Hope this helps Brent :biggrinsa

Where is the plastic PI intake available from? Is it worth the upgrade from stock?

Yes, the PI intake helps the NPI (96-98) 4.6's greatly. Alot of 96-98 guys do the entire PI swap (heads/intake), but the NPI heads aren't that terrible, its the intake manifold. I don't have a 5.0 magazine in front of me, but you can find a bunch of vendors that sell them in there, or even try EBay.
Heres a great deal

Use RTV silicone by the way.

That type of intake is a direct bolt on replacement? I won't need to retrofit anything or adapt any aspect of the install? Not that it would matter, I just want to know going in. I want to be able to give the owner all the information I can to help him decide if that is what he "wants" to do.

He is a chevy guy and this is his only ford, so is sketchy about everything. That and he has no clue what-so-ever when it comes to fuel injection, but I have fixed every problem he has come to me with so I think he will take my advice to heart.

It will fit, but no, you'll need the coolant tube, some heater hoses (because the new tube attatches to the driver head instead of the passenger head), maybe a new nipple to go with the tube, waterpump seal (you have to remove the water pump to remove the nipple). A new T-stat, and optional is a new waterpump. I also read that the only modifications you need to do are to either tap the thermostat housing if you have a plastic crossover or tap the aluminum crossover to make a place for the second temp sensor and if you are worried about the alternator bracket you change that.
And when i said to use RTV, just use a small amount with the new PI gaskets, (if you do get the PI manifold). But i see that the water ports may not line up exact in a spot or two.
Here is a pic of what i'm talking about with the PI gaskets on a NPI head side by side. People fill the gap with silicone and let fully cure before starting it.
