View Full Version : opinions on strokers?

So after tearing down my 4.6 because of a knock I found 7 spun rod bearings (don't ask! ). Fortunately for me i have a reasonably excuse to buy a new shortblock. I really want to try a stroker. I need some opinions and or experiences with any out there right now. Power potential? tuning problems? will the displacement limit my lift and duration choices? will i be the guinea pig here? :shifter:

If you are going to spend money check out
VT Engines
MV Performance
Modular Madness
Modular Powerhouse
I think you will like a stroker. I don't see any real tuning issues. I would highly suggest a set of cams and a head P&P if not already done to take full advantage of the extra cubes

I have nothing against PER. I just know that the others that I have listed have been doing Mod Motor stuff for a very long time. If we would talking pushrod I would jump on the PER bandwagon in a heartbeat. Just do your research.

I agree with D, either VT engines or MPH imo.

PM the NitrousEdge. He probibly has tried more things than just about everyone. And if he hasn't done it he knows people who have.
I really think I would stick with a pretty local engine builder though. If you have problems it is way better to be able to talk to the engine builder face to face FOR SURE!

I agree with this guy too. Mr. G doesn't know anything unless it is something to do with a modular. I think the only thing he hasn't tried with his car is putting a real motor in....a Windsor.:biggrinsa

Building engines Pushrod or Modular isn't voodo it's science :thumbs_up .

Are you sure about that!? :shifter:
Personally I would do a big bore motor over a stroker, but thats just me (from the research I have done - remember I have a 4v).
Honestly Goodwin and PER are the only 'local' engine builders I would trust with a mod motor. I don't know if Goodwin has any experience with them, but I would give them a shot.
Another somewhat local guy to talk to would be Jim Hennsler (sp?) he has done a lot of work with the stroker motors. You can find him on any of the big mustang boards.
Modular Madness doesn't build motors (often  ) for customers any more - they are pretty much happy with the VT engines and are selling those now.
VT seems to have excellent customer support, haven't heard too much bad about them.
MPH builds some insane cars, they would definetly be on the list of people you should talk to.
Lets not forget Boss330 racing - his factory stock motors and his car speak for themselves - Definetly someone else you should contact.

I agree....but not all excellent pushrod builders are building excellent modulars...

What he said...
I would goto Randy for a pushrod. For a modular I'd go somewhere else For Now.

After talking to people and researching i'm really starting to like a coast high performance 5.1L shortblock and maybe some vt engine heads and cams. What stage cams can i run without piston to valve clearance on this setup

Run the VT stage 2 with new springs.
Just wondering...what made you want to go with a CHP 5.1 over the known Modular Builders?

VT stage 2 run out of RPM too soon. Go with a comp cams 278 grind, and have the pistions notched. A friend of mine just had this done to his 2 valve motor.
Boss330 built the motor. Not a stroker, motor has ported heads, comp cams 278s, STOCK PI intake and made 330 to the wheels NA on a mustang dyno.
The turn around time was exceptional and the price was so reasonable. Al doesn't build shitty motors.
I would call Boss330.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought someone posted on here a while ago that the car made ungodly amount of horsepower.......

I liked the CHP sb's because the prices are reasonable (they don't use lot's of forged pieces on the cheaper one's which is ok for me running NA), they have a good reputation building pushrods and I've heard good things about their modulars as well. Not to mention they're one of the few out there with a 5.1L option as opposed to everyone elses 5.0 stroker. One of the negative aspects is they're out of town

Are you talking about Jason's car? I didn't know it put down that good of numbers!
Yeah, it was Jason's, ok to clarify, that's ~320 rwhp and 330 tq, my bad. But he told me it wasn't even on a dynojet. Strong numbers in my opinion.
I still think his car should MPHing higher than it is, but he hasn't had much seat time.

I wasn't doubting you, I just didn't know it made that much...That thing will move once he figures it out!

Their renegade car was far from competitive and blew up just about everytime out. They are not premier 4 valve builders. Sorry. You weren't stupid, perhaps just a little ignorant to the subject. I wasn't trying to knock you for putting the rolled eyes so sorry if i made you sad.
I wasn't doubting you, I just didn't know it made that much...That thing will move once he figures it out! Still on a stock intake. I'd like to see it with a P-51 on there. No reason it wouldn't be pushing 345 to the wheels. He has a strong motor for sure. Plus his tuners are retarded. I bet it would make even better power with an accomplished tuner.
