whats are you guys thinking is a good number of times down the track that your engine should be good for. i have made 30 plus passes with my setup not including the street pulls. what do you guys hope your car lasts for at the drag strip before a rebuild.

I made about 500 with the blower combo. I made 25 this past weekend with the Mach (about 65 since April!) Overall the Cobra has over 1,000.

I have a ton of passes with no rebuild. I have been racing since 1996 with mine. I am sure you are fine. Unless it is smoking or something.
121,000 and counting....
if i can get to 500 passes without a rebuild i will be happy. and i probably won't do anything with the lower end unless it is smoking.

My trans will go before my motor will ever go since i make some weak power compared to the big dawgs. If i blew my motor, i couldn't afford a rebuild for years, but i just love the hobby/sport so much that i'm addicted to beating on my car :burnout:

Two years ago, (when upgraded to the afr heads), tore engine down, looked absolutely pristine. The year before, when I upgraded to the HIGHER compression, again, went thru/freshened up/rebalanced.
Last winter I changed oil. Had over 120 passes on engine. This year, got at least close to 50 or so. Hasn't even started slowing down yet.
You kinda know when it's 'time'..............:>)

well mines like a time bumb all you guys got me scared with my stock bottom end and hyper pistons. 14 psi and 16 psi at the track with 75 shot nitrous. i really want to go beat it again. i think i run it threw the gears everytime i drive the car (but its without nitrous)
i just would like to have a new one ready or the money banked. summer is just getting here and i know how i felt in winter when it was broke and could not drive it anyway. wtf im going racing at rsd this month whats a 100 shot going to do anyway i need to break 10.6 @ 130 or break.
ps im nuts ps i beat a v-rod on they way home tonight but i owned one and new i could.

I have to agree with that. If you are scared of breaking it you are in the wrong hobby. The more aggressive you get the more often it can happen.
Hyper pistons aren't too bad, just make sure your motor isn't detonating any, they don't last too long w/ that kind of abuse.

Yup. I am suprised mine lasted as long as they did. I used to hot-lap that Cobra with a blower on it in the middle of summer. Beat the bajezzus out of it and always expected one of those pistons might give up the ghost. Took almost three years and 500 plus passes... But when it went, boy did it go!!! :thud:

I would keep an eye on your cyl leek down #s & keep a safe tune in it. a leek down test will not tell you if its gona blow or not. but over time you will see the leek % go up with wear.
you could have a cyl that leeks 15 %. but last time it was the same as the rest. then you can work with it & figure out if you have a problem to look into.
My motors built for apx 200 runs, then it will need a fresh hone & rings & maybe pistons, valve job, new rods to play it safe, bearings & springs. & look over everything else & fix as needed.
This is a race motor that can spin past 8500 rpm, so some parts are replaced early before failure & sold as used parts.
I would look at you plugs all the time for pepper spots, run the correct gas for what your doing & change you oil all the time. also cut open your oil filters to see what kind of stuff its filtering out. steel shavings or alum, some times you get some chunks of stuff then you know something is wearing out fast.
& look for leeks under your car before you run it cause a cracked block will leek somewere almost always.

Good info Mark, but with those hyper-crap pistons, they can simply "let go" as in come apart. It looks like in my case the #5 piston came apart, fell down into the crank as the journal was coming around the top and wedged the piston top between the crank and the block. The whole front of the motor came apart... :thud:

O yes they just let go without warning. I did get into the 10s with them, they took a 200 shot for about 15 passes then the #1 went south... is it always one of the ft cyl that go #1 or #5. they are the most starved out of the 8.
