About a month ago I picked up a really nice low milage 1994 V6 'vert for the wife for a really good price. They had just put in a new water pump before I bought it but noticed that the coolant overflow bottle was kind of nasty looking and that there was a lot of coolant overspray near the filler of the radiator so I was thinking it may have a head gasket issue from the start. Long story short I'm working on the head gasket right now as one of my winter projects. I got the driver side head off tonight (which I determined to be the worse of the two) and I was kind of surprised by what I found.

Is this typical of a compression ring failure on a head gasket? I would think if anything it would blow the other direction. I would expect to see something like this on a nitrous motor, not a 74k mile V6. It's hard to see in the pics but where it is pushed in, the piston actually crushed the ring slightly. These are Ford head gaskets so I'm almost thinking it came from the factory this way.

This is normal. Ford had a problem with the head gaskets on the V6. I've done the head gaskets on my mother-in-laws V6 T-bird and my Neighbors V6 Cougar and another guys Stock V6 super coupe. The new Felpro gasket has been revised to care for the issue.
